Streaming Funeral Scams

Everyone is online and on social media these days. Cybercriminals come up with new scams daily to trick people into sending over their personal information like logins, account info and payment info. In the latest scam, they are stealing photos and personal details found on social media from people who have died. When someone posts the death announcement the cybercriminals comment saying if you can’t make the services we are streaming the funeral at this link.

Once people click on the link, it takes them to a fake website that appears to be where they would stream the funeral. This website is really controlled by cybercriminals. They even have a link for you to pay so you can view the funeral. Once you type in your payment info, cybercriminals have access to it right away and can start buying things/stealing your money.

TIPS:

  • Never put your credit card info in a site you don’t know or haven’t verified.
  • To make it harder for cybercriminals to steal people’s information, make sure you set your social media to private. Do this especially if you are experiencing a death and are posting about it.
  • Always be cautious on things you read on social media and links you want to click.
