Ring Doorbell Phishing Scam
The Ring Doorbell has been a great invention that allows people to talk through their front door without opening it, record the front of their house, and see when packages arrive/people are at their house. Ring Doorbell customers have been targeted in the last phishing scam. Cybercriminals have been pretending to be Ring and sending customers phishing emails to try and trick them into handing over their sensitive information.
In the latest scam, cybercriminals send a phishing email that has an HTML file attached. The email appears to be coming from Ring but it is really sent from the cybercriminals. The email asks you to update your Ring membership by clicking on the file. When the person clicks on the file they then get directed to a Ring login page that is a fake page. It will ask you to enter in your login information and other sensitive information like your credit card and ssn. Once everything is entered you then get redirected to the actual Ring website which makes the whole ordeal seem legit.
Tips:
- If you ever get an email to make changes to an account, make sure you go to the website or app on your own to make the changes instead of opening an attachment or clicking a link from an unexpected email.
- Attacks can happen from any company, not just Ring. Remember cybercriminals can spoof well-known companies to try and trick you.
- Never click on a link or open an attachment from an email you weren’t expecting.
