Business Email Compromise Scams

Cybercriminals use a variety of different scams to trick people into sending over their sensitive information. One type of scam they use is a Business Email Compromise (BEC) scam. BEC scams are used to steal information, money, and products from companies. Cybercriminals are able to succeed with this scam because they spoof business email accounts and impersonate employees. 

In the latest scam, cybercriminals are impersonating people at an organization. They then send you an email looking to be from that employee and try to get you to buy your business’ products. Once you agree the cybercriminals send over credit card payment information and you can’t tell it’s fake until the product is already shipped.

Tips:

• Always think before you click or open attachments from emails you were not expecting. Look for any red flags like misspelled words and phrasing that doesn’t make sense.
• Be on high alert that an email could be sent by a fake email.
• Always make sure you verify with the person by phone or in person.
