Natural Disaster Scams
Cybercriminals are pretending to be insurance providers to help with Hurricane Ian damages.
As Hurricane Ian is still in headlines and has destroyed parts of Florida, many people are trying to help with the damages! People rely on fundraisers and insurance providers to help them pay for a damage during natural disasters. Just like any popular topic, cybercriminals are using this to their advantages and in their next scams.
In the latest scam, cybercriminals impersonate an insurance provider calling you to see if you need any coverage because of the hurricane. Cybercriminals use spoofed numbers to disguise their real number and to try and trick you into thinking they are someone they are not. They then ask you for your personal information including your account details to reimburse you for any damages. Whatever information you share will go straight in the hands of the cybercriminals.
Tips:
- Never share personal details and insurance information over the phone that was an unexpected phone call.
- Verify that messages are legit by contacting the organization through information on a trusted website.
- Never trust a caller ID. Many times, cyber criminals spoof phone numbers to try and trick you into thinking they are someone else.
