Microsoft Scam
Cybercriminals are sending out a Microsoft phishing scam that is tricking people into sending their bank account information over to them.
Did you recently purchase a subscription to one of Microsoft’s products? Or did you receive a phishing email from Microsoft?
Cybercriminals have created a phishing scam impersonating Microsoft. The email comes from a Microsoft domain and includes what looks like legitimate Microsoft logos. The email informs the person that they just bought a Microsoft subscription and includes a number they can call if this was a mistake, and they need a refund. When the person calls the number or emails the sender back, it goes to a fake Microsoft support account and call center controlled by cybercriminals. Once you are connected with them, the cybercriminals will trick you into giving them your bank account information for the refund. Sadly, you will not be getting the refund and unlocking a whole new ballgame for cybercriminals by giving them access to your bank account.
TIPS:
- Be cautious of unexpected emails. Always think before you click or call!
- Verify on your own by checking your subscriptions and your bank account charges to see if there is a charge from Microsoft.
- If you want to reach out to the support team, always go to the website in a trusted browser instead of replying to an email or calling a number from an email.
