Cybercriminals Are Posing as Recruiters
LinkedIn and many other sites allow you to use tools to help recruiters find you and you find work opportunities like the open for work feature. Not only are recruiters using this tool but sadly so are cybercriminals! In the latest scam, cybercriminals are targeting people looking for opportunities.
Cybercriminals will send an email or a text with a job posting that looks legitimate. They will include benefits and salary to make it seem real. They then will ask the person for their salary expectations. Many of these scams then ask you to keep chatting in another app like WhatsApp. The cybercriminals will ask for more information about you to apply for the job like drivers license, SSN and even a credit card for the application fee. Sadly, there is no job and if you give any of this information it will go straight to the cybercriminals!
TIPS:
- Be cautious of messages from people that ask you to change apps. Cybercriminals use this tactic to get around security.
- Don’t believe everything you see to be real. Be cautious of unexpected texts or emails from recruiters.
- Trust your gut! If a job offer sounds too good to be true it probably is.
